Wildlife Wedneday: Rabbit

Because I haven't posted one of our amazing urban jackrabbits in a long time.

This was for a photo class assignment. The goal was to frame something - so this little one is framed by the tree branches.

Photo Class: Week 1

I have started a new photography class. It's just 4, 1.5 hour classes, but I'm already really enjoying it. The instructor spent a little time on ISO/aperture/shutter speed and so forth, but also gave us information about lenses and filters. There's so much to learn! Anyway, each week we will be given an assignment for the next class. This week's assignment is to take a picture with a filter. He's given us a very broad definition of filter for the purposes of the assignment, as many people don't have a DSLR and therefore can't attach a real filter to their cameras.

I decided to stick with something somewhat like a real filter, of the kind you would hold in front of your camera, rather than attach to it. Homemade, it looks like this:

I used clear wrapping paper, essentially, and made the frame with 4 chopsticks. Not pretty, but functional.

And the result is this!

It's not a stunning piece of artwork, but it IS fun.

Reflection

The image is not of the car, or its window, but of the reflection in the window.

Buzzzz

It's not a perfect image, but for one of my first tries at getting insects, I'm pretty pleased with it. Plus, the subject wasn't really inclined to sit still.

Taken in my first photography class, the bee is nearly perfectly in focus. Natural lighting, macro.

Perspective?

This didn't turn out the way I had planned, and there's a very annoying shadow at the bottom, but I still like the idea.

I like how squat the spices look, instead of being tall and thin like the bottles (or people) in these kinds of pictures usually are. This was also part of the still life in the kitchen assignment.

Burn...

This was part of an assignment to take still life photos for class - in the kitchen!

This is a HUGE candle with some dried flowers pressed into the wax on the outside. It has a single wick in the middle, so it's burning quite a tunnel down the middle.

Last class

Tonight was our last class, and this stuff was just so much fun, I have to share! We were writing with light!

The word Love

An outline

Making the lights dance!

Dark space, long exposure, low ISO and someone willing to move that light for the duration of the exposure. Love it!

What is it?

This was part of an assignment for our photography class to photograph 12 still lifes - in the kitchen! Can you guess what I've done here?

I've put some rock salt (Coral) in a wine glass. I really like how the salt is sharp, but the glass itself is already starting to blur.

That's a different view!

This photo was also from class. The assignment had to do with context, although I can't remember why I thought this would fit the bill, but it's a neat look.

Here's another one looking straight up the side of an object, in this case, a tree!

Exploring something common

For this class assignment, we were asked to explore an object from 6 different views. I chose a garbage can, and here are a couple of my pictures.

First, the can in a fairly standard shot. Terribly exciting, isn't it?

The second is looking up the side, from the bottom. It almost evokes skyscrapers. If I were to do it again, I would go from the middle, rather than along the side, so you wouldn't see the sky and other background elements.

The third is a macro of a single bolt. Once again, if I did it again, I would go in the middle to leave out the background.

Welcome!

Here we go, the first post! My goal in this blog is to post a picture that I have taken, every day. The picture won't always have been taken on that specific day - if I aim for that, I think I'm setting myself up for failure right from the start! Some days I just won't have the time or inclination to take any pictures, but I have a lot of interesting shots from the past that I can share with you.

Without further ado, picture 1!

This one comes from a photography class I've been taking. The assignment was to photograph the images evoked by a poem. The line I was trying to capture here says "More than all these, ah yes,/More than all these". Like grains of rice, or sand. I love how sharp some of these grains are in the center. I really feel like my macro skills are coming along quite well - now to work on the lighting skills to go with it!
